Today, new reports surfaced, which state that the Michigan football contract negotiations between the school and head coach Jim Harbaugh have had a breakthrough. Despite the investigations by the NCAA and FBI, U-M reportedly feels that the time is now to extend Harbaugh, making him the highest-paid head coach in the entire Big Ten Conference. This afternoon, ESPN reporter Pete Thamel — who has done his fair share of reporting on Michigan as of late — chimed in with an interesting take on the contract talks.
Reporter has interesting take on Michigan football contract talks and their impact on the NCAA
Pete Thamel, who was the first reporter to break the news of the Wolverines’ infamous sign-stealing scandal, gave his take on the Michigan football contract talks with Jim Harbaugh this afternoon. While it was once reported — inaccurately — that Harbaugh’s contract offer was rescinded, it has since become clear that the opposite is likely true, with U-M reportedly looking to fast-track the entire process.
“If there is a contract given to Jim Harbaugh in the upcoming weeks, it would really be one of the ultimate middle fingers to the enforcement folks in Indianapolis,” ESPN writer Pete Thamel said today. “Basically, saying what the NCAA says and rules doesn’t matter — the University of Michigan is just going to plow on. It doesn’t really care about your multiple investigations.”
There are still a lot of question marks surrounding the Michigan football program heading into November, but for now, it sounds like the University of Michigan and Jim Harbaugh are going to press onward. Yesterday, Harbaugh explained his “one-track” mindset, and a few of his players — Josh Wallace and Roman Wilson — made it quite clear that the locker room is 100 percent locked in on winning games, not the outside noise.
With Purdue on the clock this weekend — not to mention Penn State and Ohio State right around the corner — things are really starting to heat up in Ann Arbor right now.
