Michigan football has pulled off some impressive recruiting wins, but one that has gone under the radar is the commitment of three-star wideout Phillip Wright.
Wright is 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, and out of Destrehan, Louisiana. Whether or not LSU is recruiting an in-state kid is always a barometer. Wright was offered by LSU and the Tigers were in the final three along with Michigan football and Georgia.
LSU pushing for a Michigan commitment
However, the Tigers have had other wideouts higher on their board. They made a late push for Wright and there were signs then that LSU wasn’t going to stop recruiting the dynamic athlete who runs 10.46 in the 100-meter dash.
That’s elite and since his commitment to Michigan football, Wright has moved up in the rankings. He was outside the top 500 and now he’s ranked No. 428 overall. Wright is also the 12th-ranked player in the state of Louisiana.
LSU added a five-star commitment from wideout (via 247 Sports’ own rankings) Derek Meadows earlier this week. The Bishop Gorman prospect chose the Tigers over Michigan and Notre Dame, among others. Yet, in terms of LSU, adding Meadows doesn’t seem to have slowed their interest in Wright.
Shea Dixon of The Bengal Tiger reports that LSU is working to flip the Michigan football commitment. He mentions that there is a chance that Wright could visit the Tigers for their recruiting event at the end of July.
That would be less than ideal for the Wolverines, who are also pursuing two other top-100 wideouts who will visit for the Michigan BBQ (Andrew Marsh and Jerome Myles). Those prospects are ranked higher, but Wright is a dynamo and if the Tigers were able to flip him, it would cause me some serious heartburn.
