Yesterday, ahead of this week’s Big Ten matchup against Rutgers, second-year defensive play-caller Jesse Minter spoke with the media. Minter, who is regarded as one of the top assistants in college football, had to lot to say about a certain Michigan football defender — Cam Goode — who has been a breakout performer for the Wolverines to this point in the season.

Michigan football defender Cam Goode is on the rise

Cam Goode — a 6-foot-1, 315+ pound graduate defensive tackle — has been a force for Michigan football so far this year. While his impact does not entirely show up on the stat sheet, Goode has not done too bad for himself through three games, recording five total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and more.

Jesse Minter is high on Goode’s performance heading into Big Ten play

Heading into this weekend’s Big Ten opener against Rutgers, where competition will increase and the games will have even more value, Jesse Minter knows that this Michigan football defender is going to play a huge role for the Wolverines. In a conference like this one, having quality defensive tackles of Goode’s size is something that you simply cannot put a price tag on.

“I think Cam (Goode) is one of our most — I think he, along with Rayshaun Benny, have really, really improved. … We wanted Cam back, especially when you look at the numbers and the depth and how many D-tackles you need to make it through a season,” Jesse Minter said this week. “We really wanted him back. We’re super happy he came back.

“He’s taken advantage of his reps,” Minter continued. “I thought this past game (the Wolverines’ 31-6 win over Bowling Green) was the best game he’s played here. And so, he’s a rhythm player, he needs to get out there and play to have production and to feel comfortable. And we’re really pleased with where he’s at. We look at it like we have that five-man D-tackle rotation. And he’s right there in the mix with all those guys.”

Wolverines ready to host Rutgers this weekend

On Saturday, Michigan football welcomes the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to the Big House for a Week 4 Big Ten matchup. Michigan is favored by 24 points heading into the contest, though right now, it’s clear that spreads don’t matter in Ann Arbor — only winning counts for Jim Harbaugh and his team.
