Who are the best Heisman candidates for Michigan football?

Michigan football doesn’t have any major preseason contenders for the Heisman but here are two names to watch.

If Michigan football is going to have a player win the Heisman Trophy this season the best candidate is running back Donovan Edwards, who is on the cover of EA Sports College Football 25.

Rival fans will say that’s far-fetched but in some ways, it’s not. Blake Corum was on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy during the 2022 season when he got hurt and essentially missed the last three games of the season.

Before that Corum was in the mix, but after that, Edwards put together some incredible performances as Michigan football won the Big Ten title.

That was the only time Edwards has been the starter. He’s added more muscle and even though the offensive line has five new starters, it will be one of the Big Ten’s best. Edwards is poised for a big season and it wouldn’t shock me if he got 1,500 total yards from scrimmage.

Edwards would need a bigger season than that to win the Heisman but in a year that’s lacking dynamic Heisman contenders at the top, a breakout season from Edwards could get him into the conversation.

Another Heisman darkhorse

Will Johnson is another player Michigan football fans should watch in regards to the Heisman. Some have speculated he could be the No. 1 overall pick.

Charles Woodson, who also wore No. 2 during his career, remains the only mostly defensive player to win the Heisman. He played offense and special teams. Johnson hasn’t done that but did say there has been talk about him playing offense.

Travis Hunter played both ways last season for Colorado. I don’t expect Johnson to do that but if he had a role and dominates at cornerback, he could at least put himself in the conversation.
