Will Tschetter coming back is a big win for Michigan basketball

Will Tschetter became the first current Michgan basketball player to confirm that he will return to the program under head coach Dusty May.

Tschetter, a former three-star signee under previous head coach Juwan Howard, has spent three seasons in Ann Arbor. He redshirted his first season so he actually has two remaining and it looks like he will end his college career where it began — with Michigan basketball.

There were rumblings that Tschetter was coming back for another season earlier this week but he posted on social media Thursday confirming the news. Along with Durral Brooks, Tschetter is the second player confirmed on the roster for next season.

Even though he only played 17.9. minutes per game last season, Tschetter averaged 6.8 points and 2.4 rebounds. He also made 51 percent of his 3-point attempts. The junior forward attempted just 1.9 per game but also shot 62.5 percent on his 2-point shots.

It always felt like Tschetter should get more minutes. Of course, the fact that he averaged 2.9 fouls in his limited action was part of the reason he was hard to play more. That’s something that he’ll need to fix. Tschetter will need to be better on defense, but he can rebound. Plus, new Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May values shooters, especially big guys who can shoot, and that describes Tschetter perfectly.

I always wondered how Tschetter would do under John Beilein. Well, he might be getting the next best thing in Dusty May and that’s why this is a good move for Michigan basketball. It feels like a good fit for both sides and it’s one less roster spot to turnover.
