Michigan football suffered a 31-12 loss to Texas in Week 2, ending a 16-game winning streak and 23-game home winning streak for the Wolverines.
New starting quarterback Davis Warren did not have a particularly great game, finishing with 304 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts and added three rushing yards on two carries.
Still, he recorded a 76.5 PFF grade, the highest of any Wolverines offensive player on Saturday. In fact, Ike Iwunnah – who played just six snaps and recorded an 82.0 PFF grade – was the only player on the entire roster who received a better grade than the starting quarterback.
While Warren’s stat line was far from impressive, Michigan has much bigger issues to worry about heading into the Week 3 matchup with Arkansas State – the final non-conference game of the regular season. The offensive line and wide receivers struggled mightily in the blowout loss.
Redshirt freshman tackle Evan Link earned a team-low 27.2 PFF grade, while guard Giovanni El-Hadi (66.0) & Josh Priebe (65.6) earned the highest grades along the line. Dominick Guidice and Myles Hinton were given 59.3 and 55.6 grades, respectively.
Warren, Wolverines’ Offensive Struggles Continue
Davis Warren has had a rough go through two games as Michigan football’s starting quarterback. He has thrown for just 322 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 63.8% of his passes. More concerningly, the Wolverines have struggled to move the ball entirely.
Michigan has accounted for less than 300 yards of total offense in each of their first two games. The offense has scored just three touchdowns, while turning the ball over four times. Michigan ranks 120th out of 134 teams in total yards per game, 113th in passing yards per game, 101st in rushing yards per game, 103rd in points per game, 121st in first downs per game, and tied for the 11th-most turnovers per game.
The Wolverines have a largely new offense and figured to have some growing pains. They will look to right the ship against an Arkansas State Red Wolves team that has allowed 27.5 points per game and 397.0 yards per game. The Red Wolves have been particularly bad against the run, allowing 199.0 rushing yards per game. Michigan will need to figure things out in Week 3 as a matchup with No. 11 USC awaits the following week.
