This fall, the Michigan football offense will be looking to lead the way to another conference championship and College Football Playoff berth. For the Maize and Blue, there has been a bit of turnover on the offensive side of the football, yet the key pieces of Michigan’s offense are still in place. According to national analysts and a few coaches, it appears that rising star tight end Colston Loveland — a sophomore — could be a superstar in the making for the Wolverines.

Heading into the 2022 season, Erick All and Luke Schoonmaker were projected to be the Wolverines’ top two tight ends. However, injuries threw a new name into the mix down the stretch: true freshman Colston Loveland. Loveland is now heading into his second season in Ann Arbor and appears poised for a major year in the Maize and Blue.

With the new season approaching fast, many national analysts — such as ESPN’s Greg McElroy — are pinning Loveland as a potential superstar for the Michigan football offense.

“I think Colston Loveland has a lot to like at the tight end spot,” Greg McElroy said. “He’ll be a featured player (for Michigan football).”

A big year is coming for the Maize and Blue in 2023

A season ago, the 6-foot-5 tight end broke out toward the end of his freshman season. All said and done, he caught 16 passes for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns, appearing in all 14 of the Wolverines’ games last fall. According to Colston Loveland himself, Michigan football is poised for a big year offensively, potentially sparking a national title run.

“It’s Michigan football, and we’re going to keep playing how we’ve been playing,” Loveland said on the ‘In The Trenches’ podcast. “We’re definitely going to run the rock. We’ve got a great O-line, great running backs, great receivers for blocking on the perimeter. But I think we’re definitely going to spark a little more in the pass game this year, especially building the chemistry. We got J.J. all offseason. I think we’re going to sling it around the yard a little more.”

With the wide receiver corps looking a bit thin right now, JJ McCarthy may need to rely on his tight ends much more than in years past. That said, keep an eye on Colston Loveland this fall, as he may emerge as a superstar throughout the coming season.
