During ‘The Game’ in 2022, Michigan football star sophomore running back Donovan Edwards, who had a knee injury and a broken hand at the time, ran for over 200 yards and a few touchdowns en route to a massive 45-23 victory over Ohio State.

The Wolverines’ win in Columbus last fall was their second in a row, marking a significant turning point in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. Recently, in an interview, Edwards broke down his recruitment and relationship with Ohio State, emphatically stating that he came to Michigan to beat Ohio State, just as he did in both seasons with the Wolverines thus far.

It doesn’t take an expert to see how talented Donovan Edwards is. From rushing the ball to receiving and more, Edwards and the Wolverines’ RB room are some of the best in the business and will be a significant factor in Michigan’s 2023 season. After winning back-to-back Big Ten titles and appearing in the College Football Playoff twice in a row, the Wolverines are looking for bigger and better in 2023 — a national title, to be exact.

If this massive goal is to come to fruition for Michigan football this fall, Donovan Edwards will likely play a significant role in the Wolverines’ success on the field. Additionally, the goals remain the same for the Maize and Blue: beat Ohio State, win the Big Ten, win the national title. If Michigan wants to achieve its final goal, securing another victory over Ohio State will be essential, and Edwards plans on doing exactly that.

“I was their number-one running back on the board,” Donovan Edwards said, according to 247 Sports. “I was just taking my time during the recruitment, and they told me they were going to take two running backs. I’m like, ‘cool. That’s perfect… you’ve got to have two running backs in the class at least.’ And Evan (Pryor) committed first. I was like, ‘alright, cool.’ I was still taking my time with the recruitment. Then they took TreVeyon (Henderson). I was just like, ‘alright, bet! Now it’s on! Now it’s on!’ I was just like, ‘alright, I’m about to go to a school and just kick y’all ass!’ That’s how I was feeling. I’m going to go to a school and let yall see what yall missed out on. And… look at it.”

Downing the Buckeyes is no small task, but the Wolverines are undoubtedly ready in 2023

Beating Ohio State is no easy task for any program, especially in their own stadium. In fact, during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure, the Buckeyes have only lost twice in their own stadium against a Big Ten opponent: in 2015 against Michigan State and in 2022 against Michigan. Few teams have managed to blow out Ohio State in recent history, and the Wolverines have accomplished that feat twice in a row over the past two seasons.

If Michigan football and Donovan Edwards aim to maintain this streak in 2023, they will need to bring their A-game and assert themselves into another Big Ten title game and College Football Playoff appearance.

So far, JJ McCarthy, Donovan Edwards, and the entire class of 2021 remain undefeated against the Buckeyes. Michigan football fans can rest assured knowing that this dynamic duo, along with the rest of the Wolverines’ roster and staff, are doing everything they can to ensure it stays that way.
