After two seasons of profound success, it comes as no surprise that Michigan football has incredibly high expectations for the 2023 season. Right now, the Wolverines are expected to claim another Big Ten title, perhaps even making a run at the national championship, just as Michigan did in 2021 and 2022. Recently, DraftKings Sportsbook released a few preseason betting odds, including Michigan at Michigan State, where the Wolverines are already heavy favorites.

A season ago, the eventual Big Ten Champion Michigan Wolverines routed the eventual 5-7 Michigan State Spartans by 22 points in a late-October brawl. The game was not too competitive on the field, though the events that followed made national news for over a month.

Regardless of the tunnel incident, Michigan football continued to storm through their regular season, reclaiming Paul Bunyan from the Spartans with a 29-7 victory. This year, the Wolverines will hope to defend the trophy when they head to East Lansing this October. According to the early betting lines, Michigan is already a 19-point favorite to handle their business on the road against Mel Tucker and company.

Mel Tucker vs. Jim Harbaugh entering year four

Mel Tucker was hired ahead of the 2020 season and was given a tall task: replacing one of the greatest coaches in Michigan State history. Three years into Tucker’s tenure, things are still uncertain, though thus far, he has seen two losing seasons with one abnormality in 2021. This fall, if his Spartans drop below .500 on the year again, Tucker will begin his tenure in East Lansing with three losing seasons of his four years at the helm.

That being said, the last time Michigan football made the trip to East Lansing, Michigan State claimed an impressive 37-33 win over the Wolverines, who eventually went on to win the Big Ten title game. The MSU loss from that season remains Michigan’s only regular season loss since the 2020 season ended — the Wolverines’ other two came in the College Football Playoff.
