Since the start of the 2023 sign-stealing scandal in Ann Arbor, rumors have been flying all over the place surrounding the Wolverines’ program. One major rumor that gained a lot of steam this week on social media was that former Michigan football coach Matt Weiss, the team’s offensive coordinator who was fired earlier this year for “computer access crimes,” was connected to the NCAA investigation that is going on right now. Today, it was confirmed that this is not true.
Former Michigan football coach not tied to new scandal
Matt Weiss led Michigan football to a top-6 offense nationally in 2022, a year that saw Michigan football win 13 games, a Big Ten title, and appear in the College Football Playoff. Earlier this year, in the midst of an investigation into computer access crimes, the Wolverines’ ex-offensive play-caller was abruptly fired.
Since firing Matt Weiss, Michigan football has promoted offensive line coach Sherrone Moore to the full-time offensive coordinator spot; however, no further explanation was ever given about Weiss’s dismissal — not yet, at least.
Today, MLive confirmed that the investigation into Matt Weiss and his computer access crimes is in no way connected to the Michigan football scandal at hand — one that has Jim Harbaugh, Connor Stalions, and the entire program in the NCAA’s crosshairs due to alleged illegal sign-stealing. MLive received this confirmation from University of Michigan deputy chief of police Melissa Overton.
The school’s investigation into Matt Weiss remains ongoing as of Thursday, the report confirms.
