Sometimes, the grass isn’t greener on the side and that’s something a former Michigan football wide receiver learned after entering the transfer portal.

Karmello English, who was a top-200 recruit in the 2023 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, signed with the Wolverines out of high school. He saw limited action last season but did catch a touchdown pass against Indiana.

That was his only reception last season for Michigan football. Then, in the spring, English decided to enter the transfer portal. However, there hasn’t been much of a market for the former four-star recruit.

There’s always a risk when you enter the transfer portal and according to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports, English will play for the Division-2 program West Georgia in 2024.

It’s hard to say why there wasn’t more interest in English. He would have had a chance to compete for playing time in Ann Arbor next season, but it’s always possible that the Alabama native wanted to be closer to home. Things like that happen all the time.

Regardless, English will have to take a detour to get back to major college football. West Georgia could be a solid opportunity to do that. English will surely get plenty of opportunities and if he has a breakout season, it’s easy to see D-1 programs expressing interest once again.

I know nothing about West Georgia and the kind of program it is. It’s closer to Alabama where English is from and will give him an opportunity to get noticed again.

But I can’t imagine English entered the portal with the idea that he would be playing for a D-2 program. If that was the case, unless he just wanted to be closer to home, it probably would have been better to stay.
