At the moment, it appears that the Wolverines may be without an offensive play-caller heading into the 2024 season; former OC Sherrone Moore has been promoted to head coach, and he will “probably not” be carrying his play-calling duties over into his new role. That said, Moore says that he has a “good idea” of who will be his Michigan football offensive coordinator next fall, leading us to believe that the role may already be silently filled by Kirk Campbell or someone else on staff.
Next Michigan football offensive coordinator already on staff?
Sherrone Moore was a top-notch play-caller for the Wolverines over the past few seasons, helping lead the way to a 28-1 overall record, a few Big Ten titles, and a National Championship from 2022-23. Now, as head coach, Moore will likely no longer be heading Michigan’s dangerous offense, though he has an early idea of who will.
“I haven’t decided yet (if I’ll be calling plays yet); probably not,” Sherrone Moore said. “We’ll take it from — you know we’ll see where we go, but we’ve got a good idea who we’ll put in that position.”
Sherrone Moore potentially looking for new OC — Kirk Campbell could fit the bill
Now, this could imply an outside hire; however, I doubt that this would be the case seeing as Moore felt this confident on the day of his introductory press conference. One early name that jumps off that page as a potential replacement Michigan football offensive coordinator is quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell, who did a fantastic job with JJ McCarthy and the QBs in 2023 and has been a top-tier recruiter since arriving in Ann Arbor.
Campbell has an extensive offensive background with a few very notable programs — previous experience with the Penn State Nittany Lions and play-calling experience with Old Dominion are just a few things that jump off the page. Still, since 2022, Campbell has been with Michigan football, and that time for him to call the shots could be now.
With Sherrone Moore suspended for the Wolverines’ season opener against ECU this year, Campbell took over as Michigan’s offensive coordinator. Michigan won that game 30-3, including an incredible performance from junior signal caller JJ McCarthy, who went 26-30 for 280 yards, three touchdowns, and no picks.
It’s hard to tell what Sherrone Moore is thinking when it comes to such an important hire right off the bat, though it sounds like he knows who he wants calling plays in 2024, and Kirk Campbell could fit the build perfectly.
