Jim Harbaugh is the head coach of the Wolverines, and with a bit of luck and contract work, hopefully that will not change for quite some time. That said, offensive play-caller Sherrone Moore and other assistants are being talked about a lot for other head coaching roles, and frankly, it’s hard to turn down such a large jump from assistant to head coach, especially at the Power 5 level. Still, the Maize and Blue have a young coach rising in the ranks that Harbaugh feels could become a Michigan football offensive coordinator down the road: Grant Newsome.
Jim Harbaugh identifies a future Michigan football offensive coordinator
Right now, Grant Newsome serves under Michigan football offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore as the tight ends coach. With some new jobs opening up, Moore is garnering all kinds of head coaching hype for the 2024 season — even being mentioned as a candidate for the Michigan State job — so keep an eye out for the Wolverines to potentially need a new play-caller next fall.
Why Grant Newsome?
While Grant Newsome — Michigan’s current TE coach and a former standout who played under Jim Harbaugh nearly a decade ago before injury — is not ready quite yet, Harbaugh thinks he will be eventually.
“There’s no doubt he picked the right profession (coaching football),” Jim Harbaugh said of Grant Newsome on yesterday’s ‘Inside Michigan Football’ radio show with Jon Jansen. “Selfishly, I’m super happy about it. He’s the tight ends coach now, but we’re already grooming him to be the offensive line coach. Once he has maybe a year or two under his belt at offensive line coach, just like Sherrone Moore, he’ll be the (offensive) coordinator. And then from then, at that point, when we can’t give him any more money or any more titles, somebody will snatch him up to be a head coach.”
Michigan football is in good hands
Jim Harbaugh had a lot of great things to say about Grant Newsome, but this really stood out to us. From the sound of it, it appears that Harbaugh already has a future offensive coordinator picked out for Michigan football, likely in anticipation of Sherrone Moore’s inevitable jump to a head coaching job or the NFL.
