INDIANAPOLIS, IN. — Today was Big Ten Media Day for the Wolverines, who appeared around noon, with Jim Harbaugh kicking things off. There, Michigan’s long-time head coach went in-depth on a number of topics, perhaps none more important than the major Michigan football position battle that has been a topic of conversation in Ann Arbor for quite some time.

Jim Harbaugh breaks down a top Michigan football position battle ahead of fall camp

Cornerback has been a significant position battle for Michigan football since the end of the 2022 season. Star cornerback Will Johnson will be returning this fall, though depth has been a concern, and the Wolverines have been doing their best to address it. From new transfers to position changes, the defensive backfield is starting to come together — today, Harbaugh gave more insight into where the position battle stands.

“We’re gonna play the best players,” Jim Harbaugh said at Big Ten Media Day this afternoon. “How do we know who the best players are? They play the best. I see that at corner. One of the starting corner positions. Amorion Walker, Josh Wallace, Ja’Den McBurrows, some other very fine players, newcomers. I think it’ll come down to a situation where Mikey (Mike Sainristil) will be a starter, Will Johnson will be a starter, and then who’s that other starter? Whether it’s a nickel or corner. And it may take a training camp. May take into the first couple of games.”

While the cornerback position is still a question mark for Michigan football right now, it appears that this position battle will work itself out by the time the Wolverines’ first major test of the year comes around. The good news for Michigan is that the first few games can be “tune-up” games before things need to truly come together, meaning the Wolverines have the time to figure these things out and play their best football.
