Over the weekend, the Wolverines began their 2023 slate with a solid 30-3 victory over East Carolina in Ann Arbor. Even though Jim Harbaugh, the team’s 9th-year head coach, was suspended for the game, he was able to give some thoughts on breakout Michigan football star wide receiver Roman Wilson during his press conference this morning. Here is what Harbaugh had to say about the team’s top wideout.

Michigan football star wideout Roman Wilson shines in season opener

JJ McCarthy, a junior quarterback, completed 26 of his 30 passes on Saturday, totaling 280 yards and three touchdowns all said and done. All three of McCarthy’s passing touchdowns were connected by a common denominator: senior wide receiver Roman Wilson, a rising Michigan football star.

“I thought (Roman Wilson) was outstanding,” Jim Harbaugh began. “He’s been outstanding all fall camp. He is in great shape, physically strong, running extremely well, moving well, and catching the ball extremely well. He’s getting separation, and when he’s on a route, he increases that separation. And the detail in his route running keeps getting better and better. Definitely an ascending player. And Cornelius Johnson did the same. Obviously, you give a sticker and game ball to Roman Wilson and JJ McCarthy, very obvious.”

Jim Harbaugh adds more on the other receivers

While Roman Wilson impressed, he was not the only Michigan football reaching target that saw some solid action over the weekend. JJ McCarthy threw the ball many times against East Carolina, connecting with a number of different receivers, including veteran wideout Cornelius Johnson.

“But also Cornelius Johnson made big catches, made big plays down the field for us again,” Jim Harbaugh continued. “They were sometimes a little bit behind him, or he had to stretch and make the big play across the middle. I was really impressed with the way he played as well. Obviously, our guys caught the ball. With only four incompletions on the day, we were catching really well.”

This weekend, Michigan football will be hosting UNLV, which is another defense that McCarthy and Wilson will be looking to slice up en route to a 2-0 start to the 2023 season.
