As Michigan football quarterback J.J. McCarthy rises up NFL draft boards, one person who isn’t the least bit surprised is Jim Harbaugh.

Harbaugh has been telling anyone who will listen that J.J. McCarthy, the Michigan football legend, is the best quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft. He was saying McCarthy should go No. 1 before others were saying he should be a top-10 pick.

The new Chargers head coach knows a thing or two about quarterbacks. In the NFL, he’s won with Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick, while developing Andrew Luck and McCarthy in college.

McCarthy and Harbaugh enjoyed great success with Michigan football, winning a national championship together, as well as a total of three Big Ten titles. J.J. McCarthy had a 27-1 record as a starter.

But Harbaugh, who attended the Michigan football pro day last week, along with hundreds of other NFL personnel, came away impressed again with J.J. McCarthy and his workout.

“That was the best throwing day I’ve ever seen,” Harbaugh said on Monday. “Like I predicted, once (GMs and coaches) were around him…it was absolutely no surprise whatsoever. They were raving. It was great to hear.”

Harbaugh took it a step further and reiterated that the Michigan football quarterack was the best in the draft.

“I think he plays quarterack the best of any quarterback in the draft,” Harbaugh said via ESPN. “He’s incredible. So, big market, small market. Cold weather. Hot weather. It won’t matter.

Denver and Minnesota aim for Michigan football QB J.J. McCarthy

NFL teams are taking notice of McCarthy. The Minnesota Vikings, according to the Bleacher Report, are going to be “aggressive” trying to move up to land J.J. However, Sean Payton also said on Monday that the Broncos would consider trading up for a quarterback too.

Harbaugh, who owns the No. 5 pick, said that with all of the quarterbacks in play, including his former Michigan football protege, having the fifth pick is like having No. 1. The Chargers don’t need a quarterback with Justin Herbert, and with teams wanting McCarthy or another quarterback, a trade is definitely possible.

I still think McCarthy should go No. 1, just like Harbaugh. But it seems as though the Michigan football quarterback won’t last past the top five.
