Remember when rival fans scoffed at the idea that Michigan football quarterback J.J. McCarthy would be a top-10 pick? Hell, even a first-round pick? Well, the way things are going, the national-championship-winning quarterback won’t even make it to pick No. 5.

The Minnesota Vikings recently made news in NFL circles by trading for a second first-round pick. After Kirk Cousins signed with Atlanta, it’s not a mystery that the Vikings need a quarterback. They seem to like the Michigan football quarterback and are scheduled to hold a private workout with him.

Michigan football QB J.J. McCarthy mocked in top five

McCarthy is going to return to Michigan football for his pro day. That should be widely attended, especially if McCarthy can run the 40-yard dash. People don’t realize it, but this guy probably runs a 4.5. He had the fifth-fastest 3-cone time of any player at the combine, not just among quarterbacks.

Michigan football didn’t ask McCarthy to throw as much as Caleb Williams did at USC, but that’s because the Wolverines didn’t need to. They put plenty on J.J.’s plate and if you don’t realize that, you don’t know what you’re looking at from a football perspective.

McCarthy has an elite arm. He’s got intangibles up the wazzu and I think he’ll prove Jim Harbaugh right as being the best quarterback from this class. Hell, Jim might even facilitate the trade to allow New York or Minnesota to draft him, because I don’t see any of the four quarterbacks lasting past the fifth pick.

J.J. McCarthy included. It’s not a matter of where he’ll be drafted — he’s going in the top five — it’s a matter of who gets him and right now, my best bets are the Patriots (No. 3), Vikings or Giants via a trade. The latest mock draft by Daniel Jeremiah has the Vikings landing him at No. 4.

Yet, the competition will be fierce and the bidding war to draft McCarthy has just started.
