Yesterday, despite some woes in the running game, the Wolverines managed to down East Carolina by 27 points, which were largely spurred by the passing attack. Michigan football QB JJ McCarthy, a junior, had one of the best performances of his life — not only was he accurate, but he was making smart and athletic plays that have the nation abuzz. After the game, we talked to Jesse Minter (interim head coach), who gave the latest on his impressive quarterback.
Latest buzz on Michigan football QB
JJ McCarthy earned the QB1 role last fall as a sophomore; since taking over, his Wolverines are 13-1 overall with a Big Ten title and College Football Playoff berth. Yesterday, during the first game of the 2023 season, Michigan football downed ECU with ease, taking the starters out during the third quarterback and cruising to a 30-3 Week 1 victory, in large part due to McCarthy’s impressive play.
All said and done, JJ McCarthy went 26/30 for 280 yards and a trio of touchdowns yesterday afternoon.
What did Jesse Minter say about JJ McCarthy?
Here is the latest buzz from Jesse Minter on his impressive Michigan football QB:
“(JJ McCarthy), he’s somebody you want to follow because of how hard he works, the type of leader that he is, the type of consistent person that he is. I told him one day in training camp that I’ve never been around a more consistent player/leader that — he gets excited when the offense makes a play. But the cool thing is, it might be the backup quarterback makes a great throw and he’s running out there getting excited. So his level of confidence, level of consistency as a leader leads to performances like that. He works really hard, he’s put in a ton of work from January till now. A lot of the guys, you see fruits of the labor when you put in that type of work in the offseason. This team has been really focused on the process over the year. We were ready to go out there and play week one so it was exciting to see.”
If Michigan football and JJ McCarthy can keep up this impressive passing attack, the Wolverines could be poised for yet another special season.
