The University of Michigan has an odd relationship with the NCAA transfer portal — the constant admissions battles for Juwan Howard and Jim Harbaugh have been well-documented over the years. Today, new Michigan football transfer Myles Hinton (who started at tackle on Saturday) broke down his battles with admissions and how it has impacted his degree program in Ann Arbor.

Transferring to Michigan football was clearly a move that Myles Hinton wanted to make because the admissions office did not make it easy for him to transition to Ann Arbor from Stanford University. Today, the new Michigan football transfer broke down his battles with the admissions office and how it turned out for him.

So, why hit the transfer portal and come to Michigan football?

“I end up in the portal, and in my mind, I feel like there’s one real optionwhich is Michigan,” Michigan football transfer Myles Hinton explained. “Because I had the prior experience, my brother going here, family lived here for like a year when my brother went here. I had a lot of experience in being around the team as a recruit, and then during COVID when I went home. So, I feel like it was kind of just natural, you know? New people on the team, new people on staff. It was just an easy transition versus going somewhere completely new.”

Still, his decision to join Jim Harbaugh’s team came with some sacrifice — a number of credits and his previous degree program.

“Right now (he is) studying general studies because the transfer credits got messed up. But I was in human biology at Stanford, and then for some reason, they (Michigan admissions) took a lot of my credits. All of my bio credits just dropped. I don’t know, it’s crazy, but I am trying to get into environmental science — I want to do marine biology, which is what I want to do when I get out of football.”

Myles Hinton is not the only Michigan football transfer to experience a run-in with the admissions department; in fact, it is incredibly common for this to happen at the University of Michigan. While the football program is typically good at avoiding major issues, Juwan Howard has lost many transfers and more due to credit transfer issues — most recently. five-star UNC guard Caleb Love was forced to de-commit because of these issues.
