Yesterday was a big day for the Wolverines, with Michigan basketball passing its first real test of the season with ease. Even without Juwan Howard, the Maize and Blue marched into Madison Square Garden in New York City, crushing St. John’s 89-73, improving to 3-0 on the season with yet another impressive victory. During the game, basketball fans turned into Michigan football fans, who voiced their displeasure with the Big Ten Conference by starting a “Free Jim Harbaugh” chant inside the world’s most famous arena.
Michigan football, Michigan basketball fans start “Free Jim Harbaugh” chant inside of Madison Square Garden
Is Michigan basketball back? It sure is trending that way, especially after a statement win over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden last night. That said, while the Wolverines’ on-court performance was impressive — to say the least — one of the game’s most notable moments was a “Free Jim Harbaugh” chant that seemed to erupt from Michigan football fans through a sea of red.
Of course, as I am sure all of our readers know, the University of Michigan football program, as well as Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, is locked in a legal battle with the Big Ten Conference, which just suspended Harbaugh on Friday for the remainder of the 2023 regular season. This Friday, U-M is seeking a TRO (temporary restraining order), which will essentially “free” Harbaugh, allowing him to coach against both Maryland this weekend and Ohio State next weekend.

Below is a video of Madison Square Garden chanting for Harbaugh.
“I don’t know (if I’ll speak in court on Friday) exactly. I don’t know exactly how it’s gonna go,” Jim Harbaugh said on Monday following Michigan football’s win over No. 10 Penn State last weekend. “I’m gonna be able to go though. I don’t know if I’m gonna be — that’s not my dance floor. I’m not an attorney. I always wanted to be. I’ve watched a lot of shows. Watched Judge Judy a lot.”
