Michigan football will be in dire need of a quarterback next season. Recent reports indicate that the Wolverines continue to make efforts to flip No. 1 recruit Bryce Underwood. Michigan communicated with Underwood a few weeks ago, and they’ve reportedly “ramped up” conversaitions more recently. In light of Michigan’s pursuit for Underwood, four-star quarterback Carter Smith decommitted from the program Wednesday evening. Smith originally agreed to come to Ann Arbor under former head coach Jim Harbaugh. With Smith gone, Michigan will likely go full-throttle to get Underwood.
The Wolverines offered Underwood a competitive NIL deal that’s close to what LSU proposed to him. Underwood’s NIL package is expected to be more than $5 million over the course of three to four years. Steve Wiltfong of On3 said it’s a “recruitment to monitor moving forward”.
Michigan’s Late Push for No. 1 Recruit
Michigan is sitting on “the most well funded” NIL pool it’s ever had. If it comes down to money, a bidding war could be in the cards. Underwood’s father weighed in on the aspect of money in his son’s college career.
“We try to put the cash in the back of the whole situation because whatever his dreams are, we want him to live those out,” Bryce Underwood’s father, Jaquan, told On3 in June at the On3 Elite Series. “The money is going to come when he’s just living his dreams.
“I don’t want to get it twisted, money is a huge deal. At the same time again, man, it’s about Bryce being able to turn his dreams into goals. So whatever field he goes in football, sports, man, I’m great with it as long as long as he’s happy.”
