Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy is heading into his second season as the Wolverines’ full-time starter after replacing incumbent starter Cade McNamara during Week 2 of last season. McCarthy and his team have massive expectations this fall, perhaps greater than any Michigan program in recent history.

For the Maize and Blue, this year may hinge on their rising junior quarterback; according to an ON3 analyst, the former five-star has “elite tools” and the potential to lead Michigan to the No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Michigan football, JJ McCarthy heading into massive 2023 season

According to ON3 analyst JD Pickell, JJ McCarthy has all of the talent and potential needed to bring home Michigan’s first national championship in nearly 30 years. After impressing during the latter stages of the 2022 season, it’s clear that he is on the cusp of a massive breakout season heading into the 2023 slate.

“JJ McCarthy has elite tools, looked really promising at the end of last year, especially against Ohio State. The College Football Playoff left something to be desired,” said PicKell on ‘The Hard Count.’ “But you feel like if he takes the next step? And Rece Davis said this. If he takes the next step? That’s kind of the key for Michigan. Then Michigan could really explode.”

Although it is unlikely that Michigan football will be ranked as the top team heading into the upcoming season, it is expected that Georgia, the two-time CFP national champions, will hold that title. However, what truly matters is ending up as the No. 1 team at the end of the season, and it seems that the 2023 Wolverines have a good chance of achieving this.
