After a successful 2022 campaign, one which saw the Michigan football team finish with a perfect 12-0 record in the regular season and a victory in the Big Ten title game, the Wolverines’ assistant coaches got paid big time. According to an MLive report, Jim Harbaugh’s staff earned nearly $2,500,000 in incentives throughout last college football season.

Michigan football goes undefeated, staff earns massive bonuses

Throughout the 2022 season, we witnessed the most dominant stretch of Michigan football in decades. The Wolverines opened the season with three-straight blowout wins before knocking off every Big Ten foe it faced, including 20+ point victories over Michigan State (29-7), Penn State (41-17), and Ohio State (45-23). Additionally, the Michigan Wolverines brought home their second-consecutive conference championship with a 43-22 victory over Purdue in the title game, which sparked a College Football Playoff berth.

Sadly, the Wolverines’ incredible season was cut short by the TCU Horned Frogs, who defeated Michigan football by six points in the Fiesta Bowl. Still, the Michigan Wolverines’ assistant coaches raked in some serious cash bonuses for achieving many of the team’s other goals.

Co-offensive coordinators Matt Weiss and Sherrone Moore reportedly brought home the most incentives — each coach earned $525,000 in bonuses last season. On top of that, first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter brought home an additional $425,000 for his stellar defensive play-calling a season ago. Michigan finished in the top-7 nationally in scoring offense, total offense, scoring defense, and total defense en route to a 13-1 Big Ten title season.

The rest of Michigan’s staff brought home bonuses of around $125,000, though Mike Elston earned twice this amount due to a clause in his contract.

In total, Michigan football will pay $2,475,000 to its assistants for their performance a season ago. Additionally, Jim Harbaugh himself brought home around $2,000,000 on top of his base salary due to incentive pay.
