INDIANAPOLIS, IN. — Today, during Big Ten Media Day at Lucas Oil Stadium, Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh had a chance to comment on a number of trending topics in the world of college football. One of these hot topics is the forthcoming expansion of the College Football Playoff, which will increase the CFP from four teams to 12 teams in 2024. According to Harbaugh, “more is better” when it comes to the playoffs.

Since its inception in 2014, the College Football Playoff has featured the top four teams in the sport. In this decade, Michigan football has appeared in the CFP twice in a row, but unfortunately lost on both occasions, most recently during the Fiesta Bowl against TCU on New Year’s Eve last year. That said, next fall, the playoff will expand to 12 teams, adding many new elements to the quest for the national title — here is what Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh had to say about the upcoming changes.

“More is better,” Jim Harbaugh said of the College Football Playoff on Big Ten Media Day. “Very few times is less more — not a whole lot of times. A lot of the time more is more. What other sports only have four teams in a championship playoff? … I look forward to it.”

With these impending changes, the College Football Playoff will become more inclusive, potentially leading to a more diverse list of future national champions. For Michigan football, currently at the pinnacle of college football, this expanded playoff format will likely offer more opportunities to contend for the program’s first title since 1997. Additionally, it sets up the exciting possibility of a College Football Playoff game being hosted at the renowned Big House in Ann Arbor, MI.
