Yesterday was an incredible Saturday full of college football and fanfare for the second weekend in a row. For Michigan football, the weekend brought a second-straight victory — this time, the Wolverines downed the UNLV Rebels (35-7) en route to a 2-0 start to the season. Despite the win, the ESPN Football Power Index has dropped the Maize and Blue down multiple spots for the second weekend in a row, now pinning Michigan as the nation’s 10th-ranked team, behind schools like Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame, and others.

Michigan football drops in FPI rankings once again despite win over UNLV

Michigan football did not cover the spread for the second weekend in a row yesterday during its 35-7 victory over the UNLV Rebels. Still, the Wolverines had their starters out for over a quarter of the game after taking an early 35-0 lead, which is a large reason why Michigan did not break 40 points on the Rebels.

Regardless, ESPN’s famous Football Power Index rankings have Michigan football falling once again. After last weekend’s 30-3 victory over ECU, the Wolverines went from 6th to 8th nationally; now, Michigan is down to 10th in the nation, dropping another two spots heading into Week 3 of the season.

Who are the Wolverines behind?

A number of schools have jumped Michigan football in these ESPN rankings — Notre Dame, Penn State, and Ohio State being the most notable for Michigan fans. The other programs ahead of the Maize and Blue in this week’s FPI rankings include Alabama, Georgia, Texas, USC, Florida State, and Oklahoma.

It’s worth noting that, for the time being, Michigan football is ranked No. 2 nationally in the AP and coaches polls — this will likely remain the same until (if) the Wolverines drop a game or have the room to move up to No. 1 nationally.
