Ahead of the Wolverines’ 2023 season, Jim Harbaugh added a new Michigan football edge rusher to his roster: four-star transfer portal defender Josaiah Stewart from Coastal Carolina. For the Maize and Blue, Stewart is yet another key piece of the puzzle as Michigan pursues a national title this fall.

New Michigan football edge rusher ranked as a top 5 transfer addition in the Big Ten

According to new transfer portal rankings from Saturday Tradition, Michigan football has two major defensive additions on its roster right now. Ernest Hausmann, a new linebacker from Nebraska, is ranked at No. 1, while edge rusher Josaiah Stewart is ranked at No. 4.

Josaiah Stewart is a potential breakout candidate for the Michigan football team this year, bringing incredible speed and skill to the Wolverines’ defense in pursuit of a third-straight conference championship game berth. During his time at Coastal Carolina, Stewart proved to be a valuable asset at the Group of 5 level. Now, he is looking to prove that he belongs in the Big Ten.

During his freshman season in 2021, Josaiah Stewart was 5th nationally in sacks with 12.5. He recorded far fewer sacks last year for a number of reasons, though if he can get anywhere near his 2021 numbers for the Wolverines, he may, in fact, be one of the Big Ten’s top transfers.

While Stewart is not garnering the kind of national hype that a few other Wolverines are, this new Michigan football edge rusher appears poised for a big year in Ann Arbor and has been pinned as a top 5 defensive transfer portal pick-up ahead of the new season.
