Michigan football does things a little differently when it comes to NIL.

NIL deals are taking over the world of college football right now, and according to reports, they are bleeding into the transfer portal and high school recruiting. That said, Michigan football has not become one of the schools that offer a “pay to play” scheme, according to Blake Corum, who had a lot to say about the Wolverines’ NIL efforts during Big Ten Media Day last week.

Blake Corum explains Michigan football approach to NIL

As of late, rumors of players and recruits being offered millions of dollars to commit to a school have become all too common. However, the Wolverines are not one of these schools; in fact, according to Blake Corum, Michigan football does the opposite — you eat what you earn, nothing more.

“If you come here and if you’re successful, you have a good chance of making a good amount of money,” Blake Corum said last week, per On3. “NIL doesn’t matter at Michigan. That’s why we’re not out here paying high school athletes. You have to come here, put in the work. You’ll reap what you sow.”

After nearly finishing as a Heisman Trophy candidate last fall, Blake Corum is ready for a massive season in year two. Due to his impressive performance, Corum has gained quite a bit of positive NIL attention, something that he says comes from “putting in the work.” While the Wolverines have the NIL infrastructure, Michigan football will not be paying a player before they earn the money.

“I hear a lot about the portal and $13 million,” Corum said. “Not that I don’t know that’s true. But I think when they get there, they don’t actually get the money. That’s what I think — lies. I don’t know, I’m not there. But what I would tell high schoolers is come here, put in the work. You’re not going to get cash upfront. You come here and put in the work, you’ll make a good amount of cash.”
