On3 recently unveiled its highly anticipated top 100 players in college football rankings, and several exceptional Michigan football players earned well-deserved recognition. Among the notable names featured on the list is JJ McCarthy, the immensely talented former five-star quarterback who is set to embark on his second season as a starter for the Michigan Wolverines.

According to the latest preseason rankings, JJ McCarthy has secured the impressive distinction of being ranked as the 70th-best player in all of college football. This placement highlights his immense skill, potential, and impact on the field. As a rising star in the college football landscape, McCarthy’s presence promises to be a significant asset for the Michigan Wolverines as they strive for continued success in the upcoming season.

Michigan football has a lot of high hopes for the 2023 college football season — the Wolverines have won the Big Ten twice in a row now, though are without a College Football Playoff win despite back-to-back appearances among the top-4. This fall, nothing less than a national championship will be seen as true success for Jim Harbaugh, who is heading into his 9th season as head coach in Ann Abror.

So far, JJ McCarthy has left his mark on the Michigan football program by leading his team to the winningest season in program history, going 13-1 as a first-year starter in 2022. That said, McCarthy had plenty of flaws a season ago, flaws that need to be addressed if the Wolverines want to break through their glass ceiling in 2023.

McCarthy’s arm talent is apparent — few quarterbacks in college football can throw a better ball with the accuracy and speed that JJ can; he’s an NFL quarterback when he gets hot. That being said, he struggled to remain hot until the Ohio State game, where he led the Wolverines to a massive 45-23 win in Columbus.

Still, consistency remains an area of concern for the young quarterback, who is heading into his third season in Ann Arbor.

JJ’s 70th overall ranking is likely factoring in that, despite a solid first year as a starter, we still really haven’t seen what he can do yet — the Wolverines’ run-heavy scheme plays a large role in that. Seeing as McCarthy ranks among the top 10 in the Heisman Trophy betting odds, there is no lack of hype surrounding the Wolverines’ current QB1.
