If Michigan football legend Desmond Howard had it his way, Greg Doyel would not be a Heisman Trophy voter any longer. Why? Well, Doyel recently used his platform to advocate against Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy, publicly calling out the Wolverines amid scandal and trying to persuade his audience, which may include other voters, against the junior quarterback.

As a Heisman Trophy voter, you are not supposed to talk about the race, especially not advocating against one of the nation’s top candidates. That said, Greg Doyel of the IndyStar did exactly that earlier this week — saying that McCarthy would “pay the price” on his ballot and more — which led Michigan football legend and former Heisman winner (1991) Desmond Howard to call him out ahead of the Wolverines’ game against Penn State.

“He’s a clown,” Desmond Howard said of Greg Doyel. “A complete clown.

“For a guy to say that (about JJ McCarthy), his vote should be taken away from him,” added the Michigan football legend. “Absolutely — it makes no sense. That’s from a (Heisman Trophy) winner.”

McCarthy could become Heisman frontrunner with standout game against Penn State

Right now, JJ McCarthy is second in the Heisman Trophy odds, only coming in behind Washington quarterback Michael Penix, who just had a solid game against the USC Trojans last weekend. This afternoon, when No. 3 Michigan football takes the field against No. 10 Penn State, McCarthy will have his shot at staking his claim back at the top of the Heisman betting odds, just as he was a few weeks ago.
