In 2022, Michigan football linebacker Michael Barrett had a breakout season. Barrett put up career-highs in multiple defensive statistics, proving his value and versatility as a defender. Barrett has been with the Wolverines since 2018 and has one more year of eligibility remaining. Going into his final season with the Wolverines, Barrett has big expectations for the team’s success.

Michigan football linebacker Michael Barrett believes winning means “everything”

Michael Barrett was recently featured on an episode of Michigan Athletic’s Those Who Stay series. When asked about the importance of winning, Barrett replied, “What winning means to me is everything. It’s what you play for, it’s what you do it for. Nothing kind of beats that feeling to win.”

Barrett then broke down his reasons for returning to Michigan football and gave some high expectations for next year’s season. “My decision to return, I just felt like, coming back and getting that masters degree, getting another Big Ten championship, going for another national championship, there wasn’t really a con of coming back,” said Barrett.

The Wolverines were recently ranked No. 2 in the latest Big Ten power rankings behind only Ohio State. Needless to say, Barrett should be happy with his decision to return as Michigan football is expected to do a lot of winning this season.

In 2022, Barrett had 72 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two interceptions. For his final season, Barrett expects to be one of the best in the league. Barrett said, “Me and [linebacker Junior Colson], you know we always compete with each other… He kinda told me, let’s come back and be the top linebackers in the country next year.”
