At the end of January, 247 Sports ranked the top 30 uniforms in college football. At the top of their list are three Big Ten teams: Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan football.

Michigan football comes in at No. 2 behind Ohio State

The Michigan football uniform is iconic — the Winged Helmet, Maize pants, and blue top. Despite the legendary and unique look, the Wolverines’ uniform still came in 2nd place on 247’s list. Ahead of Michigan’s uniform is that of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who sit atop the 30-team list.

Below the Wolverines is another Big Ten program: the Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State’s uniform is less iconic- relatively bland with few details or changes made over the years — though it is legendary just the same. Like Michigan football, Penn State has kept its same look for many years throughout the good and bad years.

Wolverines’ uniforms should be No. 1

While 247 Sports has Ohio State at No. 1 — and I am undoubtedly biased here — I think the Wolverines should sit atop the list. Ohio State’s uniforms are less iconic, the helmet design is worse, and the Buckeyes’ jersey/pant combo is just as plain as Michigan’s.

Over the past few years, the Wolverines have toyed with their uniform combinations, though they kept the helmets the same. Michigan rolled out an all-Maize look in its 33-17 win over Florida in 2017. Michigan football has worn all-white uniforms on the road since hiring Jim Harbaugh; however, as of late, the Wolverines have thrown maize pants and blue pants into the rotation.

Additionally, Michigan messes with its accessories (socks, gloves, etc.) nearly every game. It has been wearing all-blue uniforms more than anything when in a “home game” scenario, such as the 2021 Ohio State game, the 2021 Orange Bowl, and the 2022 Big Ten title game.
