Over the past three seasons, Michigan football has learned how important it is to have a reliable kicker and that’s why the latest transfer portal addition for the Wolverines is so important.

After Jake Moody went to the NFL following the 2022 season, Michigan football landed James Turner in the portal, and despite a miss in the Rose Bowl, he was crucial in the national championship season. Turner was vital against Ohio State, making three key field goals.

After some struggles from the kickers this spring, including a short miss during the Michigan football spring game, it was clear the Wolverines needed a veteran kicker and they got one Friday. Dominic Zvada joined the Wolverines from Arkansas State, announcing his commitment in a post on X, and here are some thoughts.

Michigan football fills a key need

Last season, Zvada was money for Arkansas State. He made 17-of-18 field goal attempts and the only miss was a block. The rising junior also connected on 3o-of-31 PATs. Another impressive part about his game is like Moody, he’s solid from distance.

Zvada made a 50-yard-plus field goal in 2022 and 2023. But more importantly, he was consistently good from deep going 12-of-14 from field goals 40 yards or longer.

It’s good to see the Wolverines being active in the portal. They are the favorite for Amorion Walker, the former Michigan football player who transferred to Ole Miss to play wide receiver. It sounds like he’ll be coming back as a wideout and hopefully, this is the first of a few moves like adding a corner or some more defensive depth.

Getting Zvada for the next two seasons is a huge win though.
