Michigan Football Makes Another Defensive Coaching Hire

It’s not often that the team with the No. 1 total defense in the FBS sees a complete defensive coaching change in the offseason. However, after Jim Harbaugh announced he would leave Michigan to coach the LA Chargers, many of Michigan’s defensive coaches decided to follow Harbaugh and make the NFL jump as well. In the past few weeks, Michigan football has been steadily filling in the coaching staff, and it appears Michigan has made yet another hire. According to 247 Sports, Michigan is hiring LaMar Morgan as its next defensive backs coach.

With the departure of Steve Clinkscale to the NFL, Michigan is hiring LaMar Morgan to be the new defensive backs coach. Morgan has coached defensive backs at various colleges and was most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at Louisiana.

In 2021, Morgan served as the defensive backs coach for Vanderbilt and increased interceptions from 2 in 2020, to 13 in 2021. A year later Morgan became the defensive coordinator for Louisiana and led a defense that recorded 15 interceptions, 14th highest in the FBS.

Under Morgan as defensive coordinator, Louisiana ranked No. 1 nationally in defensive touchdowns this past season and top-35 in takeaways, sacks and defensive yards per play.

Louisiana was 14th nationally in interceptions in 2022 and also top-25 in pass efficiency defense.

Michigan’s secondary will retain some star talent heading into the 2024 season, including safeties Rod Moore, Makari Paige, and cornerback Will Johnson. Under Morgan’s lead, Michigan’s secondary could be gearing up for another huge season.
