What a day it has been for the Michigan football NFL Draft! Within an NFL Draft dominated by trades and running backs, the Michigan Wolverines were able to find its way into the conversation. Mazi Smith has been officially selected No. 26 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, and the Dallas Cowboys found themselves an absolute gem.
Michigan football NFL Draft: Mazi Smith selected No. 26
For Michigan football fans, this should come as no surprise. In terms of stopping the running game, Mazi Smith was one of the very best in college football this past season. When looking at stats, Smith recorded 49 tackles, including 2.5 for loss.
The Wolverines were one of the best when considering their ability to stop the run. Michigan football ranked No. 3 overall, allowing just 85.2 yards per game in 2022. Mazi Smith was a significant part of that and will continue to impress in this aspect. In addition, Smith will be adding to a defensive line that boasts players like Micah Parsons, who already terrorizes the NFL with his pass-rushing ability.
Now, with Mazi Smith on the team, the Cowboys have the potential to shut down all aspects of opposing offenses. It’s just a matter of time before Smith becomes one of the best run-stoppers in the NFL. Mazi Smith will have the chance to show his dominance this coming season. As Wolverine fans are well aware at this point, it’s not a matter of if but rather a matter of when.
