J.J. McCarthy is a Michigan football legend and he had a perfect response to critics asking about why his stats aren’t better.
Rival fans of Michigan football will stop at nothing to try and bring down J.J. McCarthy. They call him “average” or a “game manager” and scoff at the idea that he’ll be a first-round pick.
Of course, these are the same folks who have been saying that the NCAA is going to “drop the hammer” any day on the Michigan football program for “Signgate” when that clearly is never going to happen.
As far as McCarthy is concerned, NFL teams have a lot of appreciation for what he brings. He’s been projected as a first-round pick by just about every draft analyst and he’s already met with Chicago, New England, Denver, Las Vegas, Minnesota, Seattle, and Denver. All of those teams have needs at quarterback, plus own first-round picks.
McCarthy won’t run at the combine this week due to a tightness in his hamstring. Yet, he’s going to throw and he’ll kill it in the interviews.
J.J. McCarthy shreds his critics
On Friday, McCarthy met with the media. In addition to shedding light on his conversation with Jim Harbaugh about staying or leaving for the NFL draft, he was asked about his stats at Michigan or lack of them.
McCarthy’s response was perfect; “Stats for me, wasn’t really a big thing. All I cared about was being the best teammate I could possibly be, being the best quarterback I could possibly be — whatever was asked of me, and the only stat I cared about was (winning) and we did pretty good in that category.”
McCarthy finished his Michigan football career with a 27-1 record as a starter. He’s a three-time Big Ten champion and a national champion.
As far as I’m concerned, you can’t quarterback any better than that.
