Following today’s victory over the UNLV Rebels at the Big House in Ann Arbor, junior Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy started earning comparisons to a former Heisman Trophy winner. McCarthy, who completed 22 of his 25 passes today for 278 yards and a pair of touchdowns during today’s win, is being compared to Joe Burrow, the current QB for the Cincinnati Bengals and a 2019 Heisman winner (and 2020 national title winner). After the game, McCarthy gave us his thoughts.

Michigan football quarterback compared to Joe Burrow

Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy had an incredible game today, prompting analysts to begin comparing him to former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. As all college football fans likely know quite well by now, Burrow was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, won the Heisman Trophy, won a national title, and is regarded as the best college QB of all time. Following the game, he was asked if he has visualized himself as Burrow (or another NFL QB)

“Yeah, it’s Joe (Burrow) all the way,” JJ McCarthy explained after the game. “And he’s been my guy since he got at LSU. And when he had that year, I knew he was gonna have, it just proved me right. So yeah, Joe is definitely my guy then and now.

“It’s definitely night and day,” JJ McCarthy continued when asked about his confidence level from last year to this year. “With every rep, with every practice, with every game, I just get more and more comfortable, and it’s still going up. I feel like there’s still a big gap for me to improve, and I’m striving to fill that gap as much as possible every day.”

JJ McCarthy continues to impress

JJ McCarthy has now posted back-to-back incredible performances, leading many to pin him as a top Heisman contender and more heading into Week 3 against Bowling Green next Saturday.
