Heading into the season, junior Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy was barely inside of the top 10 in the 2023 Heisman Trophy odds (tied for 10th). That said, after an impressive, record-setting Week 1 performance over the weekend, the Wolverines’ QB1 has made a massive leap in the newest odds, per Vegas Insider.

Updates 2023 Heisman Trophy odds for Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy

Over the weekend, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy torched East Carolina, completing 26 of his 30 passes for an impressive 280 yards and three touchdowns — he was the No. 1 graded player in the Big Ten conference (PFF), and set a program record for completion percentage (min. 30 passes).

Now, in this week’s updated 2023 Heisman Trophy odds, the Michigan football star is among the nation’s top 5 — a great leap from where he was heading into the year.

Per the updated odds, JJ McCarthy currently has the 4th-best odds of winning college football’s most prestigious individual award, the Heisman Trophy. For reference, McCarthy was tied for 10th with former Michigan football quarterback Joe Milton ahead of the season, though his impressive Week 1 showing has now pinned him among the nation’s top contenders.

The three candidates ahead of JJ McCarthy are Caleb Williams (quarterback, USC), Jordan Travis (quarterback, Florida State), and Michael Penix Jr. (quarterback, Washington). McCarthy is currently +1600 in most major sportsbooks, with the notable exception of DraftKings (+1700).
