Yesterday, the Wolverines struggled on offense, yet still came away with a solid 31-6 victory over the Bowling Green State Falcons during the team’s final non-conference matchup of the 2023 season. Following the game, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy — who had an uncharacteristically bad performance, throwing three picks all said and done — addressed the media. Here is what JJ is saying about his high-turnover performance.

Michigan football quarterback takes responsibility for three-interception game

Following the 31-6 victory over Bowling Green, here is what the junior Michigan football quarterback said of his three interceptions.

“You know, I’m gonna take all those on the chin, put them all on me,” JJ McCarthy said. “You know, there’s a lot of stuff that just obviously didn’t go my way and didn’t go the offensive way. But I just can’t wait to watch the tape and just see the mistakes that were made and get better from it, honestly. But I’m gonna take all those on the chin, they were on me.”

Between drives, did the interceptions start getting into JJ McCarthy’s head? According to the star quarterback, they didn’t  — it boiled down to separate mental mistakes throughout the game.

“No. No matter what — whether it’s a great throw or an interception — I’m always gonna move on and stay in the present moment, no matter what it is,” McCarthy explained. “And you know, it just didn’t go well after the first one, and I just got to watch the film and see what I can do better.”

Michigan football is still in good shape heading into Big Ten play next weekend

Many Power 5 teams — especially the top-4 teams nationally — had rough games on Saturday. Still, JJ McCarthy is confident that this year’s Michigan football team is special, which is a good mindset as the Wolverines approach Big Ten play next weekend.

“I mean, this is a great team, and he touched on something that was huge, is the camaraderie of the team,” the Michigan football quarterback said. “When I was struggling, and I came back to the sideline, and everybody was trying to pick me up — we have a team full of leaders that got each other’s back no matter what. And that’s something truly special. And like Blake (Corum) said, it’s always how can we learn from our success? Our failures? How can we get better? That’s the main message all year long, all offseason, all camp. I’m just really excited to keep moving forward with this team, and it’s gonna be one hell of a year.”

Through three games, JJ McCarthy has over 700 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. Additionally, Michigan football boasts a solid 3-0 record heading into the Rutgers game next weekend, which will officially kick off the Wolverines’ nine-game Big Ten slate, which will end in late November against Ohio State at the Big House.
