The nation is buzzing about the Wolverines’ third-year quarterback, JJ McCarthy, who had an incredible game on Saturday. McCarthy completed 26 of his 30 passes for 280 yards and a trio of touchdowns with zero interceptions against East Carolina, setting a new Michigan football passing record against the Pirates in his first-ever Week 1 start.

JJ McCarthy sets Michigan football passing record against East Carolina

Last year, JJ McCarthy didn’t get his first start for Michigan football until Week 2 of the 2022 season — he promptly beat out Cade McNamara for the QB1 role, forcing the former Big Ten title-winning quarterback to transfer after the season. From there, McCarthy led his Wolverines to a perfect 13-0 record (including blowout wins over Penn State and Ohio State, a Big Ten title, and more) heading into the College Football Playoff.

Now, just one game into the 2023 season, the Wolverines’ quarterback has already set a new Michigan football passing record for completion percentage in a game (minimum 30 throws). In the long history of Maize and Blue football, few quarterbacks have gotten to throw the ball 30 or more times in a single outing — with McCarthy completing 26 of his 30 attempts against East Carolina, McCarthy is now in school record books for highest completion percentage in a single game (min. 30 throws).

Throughout the remainder of the 2023 season, expect JJ McCarthy to continue gunning for school records and more as he looks to lead Michigan football to its ultimate goal: a national championship.
