Michigan football is currently being led by one of the best Wolverine quarterbacks to ever wear a winged helmet: JJ McCarthy. While this year’s season is still not finished, it’s easy to start wondering about Michigan’s future, especially at the quarterback position. And as it currently looks, the 2024 Michigan quarterback room could be headlined by JJ McCarthy, Jadyn Davis, Alex Orji, and Jayden Denegal.
Michigan football looks to have an insane quarterback room in 2024
Jim Harbaugh has done an excellent job at recruiting and developing the current quarterback room, and next year’s has the potential to be the best one yet. Between returning players, new recruits, and possible transfers, Michigan has plenty of elite options to put under center. Here’s a current look at the projected Michigan football depth chart for 2024 (per @BBsBigHouse1/Twitter).

JJ McCarthy
The glaring question about next year’s quarterback room is what will JJ McCarthy do after the conclusion of this season? McCarthy is eligible to declare for the NFL draft this offseason if he chooses and is currently the No. 7 ranked quarterback in the draft class according to NFL Draft Buzz.
Should McCarthy come back, he will undoubtedly be the day one starter and bring Michigan another year of dominant quarterback play. However, if McCarthy chooses to go, Michigan has plenty of contingencies.
Alex Orji/Jayden Denegal
Sitting in the shadows behind JJ McCarthy are rising stars Alex Orji and Jayden Denegal. Both Denegal and Orji have taken a huge step up in their sophomore seasons and have shown flashes of elite talent. For Denegal, he has shown flashes of greatness with his arm and accuracy, while Orji has shown his insane athleticism and scrambling ability.
Should McCarthy choose to move on, Orji and Denegal will likely battle for the QB1 position on for the 2024 season. Each quarterback brings a very different skillset to the table, so it could be interesting to see how these two quarterbacks are used in a possible “Michigan method” role with both seeing action early next year.
Jadyn Davis
While Jadyn Davis will likely not be competing for a day one starting job, he carries some of the highest potential of anyone in the room. Davis recently wrapped up his senior season at Providence Day School and will be enrolling early at Michigan this winter.
With a four-star rating, Davis is now the No. 7 composite-ranked quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247 Sports. While there shouldn’t be any expectation for Davis to show up and make an immediate splash, he will have an amazing opportunity to develop in a room loaded with experience and talent.
Davis Warren
While 2023 was certainly a quiet year for the former Michigan backup, Davis Warren could still be a major contributor to Michigan’s quarterback room. If McCarthy leaves, Warren will be the most experienced quarterback at Michigan.
Despite having a quiet season this year and losing playing time to Orji and Denegal, Warren is still a valuable presence in the quarterback room and will fight hard to climb the depth chart in 2023.
Possible Transfers
With transfer portal season just getting started, there are still possibilities of the Wolverines picking up another signal caller, especially if McCarthy chooses to leave.
Even if Michigan doesn’t land a huge name target to be a future starter, a backup quarterback with experience is certainly beneficial. Last year, Michigan picked up Jack Tuttle, who has proven to be a valuable backup and experienced mentor in the quarterback room.
