Fall camp is underway in Ann Arbor, and with less than four weeks until kickoff, the nation is buzzing about the upcoming season for the Wolverines. For Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards, his time with the Maize and Blue is significant, but his ambitions extend far beyond college. According to Edwards, he aspires to join the ranks of names like Barry Sanders and others when all is said and done.
Donovan Edwards expected to be a top prospect
This week, Pro Football Focus released an interview with Michigan football running back Donovan Edwards, who is ranked as one of the top players in the country and is anticipated to be a notable prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft. While Edwards is primarily focused on aiding Michigan in their quest for a national title this year, the junior Wolverine also highlighted his ultimate goal on the gridiron — to become the greatest of all time.
But what sets Donovan Edwards apart for Michigan football? Simply put, his skillset transforms him into a threat all over the field.
“I’m the best dual-threat running back. I’ll catch a ball 50 yards down the field, over the shoulder. I’ll be the best slot receiver in the country if I was really mastering that craft, which I am this year. You can’t put a linebacker or safety on me. Shoot, you might have to double-team me or put your best corner on me. You can’t look at my game and go, ‘Oh, that’s weak.’”
What is the final goal for this Michigan football running back?
But what is the ultimate goal for Donovan Edwards beyond his few years with Michigan football?
“I will go down as one of the greatest running backs to ever play the game,” Edwards stated when asked about what should be expected of him in the future. “I’ll be up there with Walter Payton, Barry Sanders. I believe I will revolutionize the game and the position at running back, for how I run my routes, for how I play as a running back and how I can play at receiver, too.
“This is the perfect time for myself specifically because the NFL wants running backs who can catch. If the NFL wants to guard a running back, good luck with that. I don’t care who you are. Good luck guarding me. I see all the stuff right now with how the running backs aren’t getting paid. I believe that I’ll get paid for how I play the game.”
