Michigan football wide receiver Roman Wilson, who recently switched his jersey number from No. 14 to No. 1, is living up to the preseason hype. Despite previous mid-season injuries that prevented a breakout season in years past, he has been impressing fans this year through three games of the season. Heading into the Big Ten conference opener against Rutgers this weekend (12:00 PM kickoff), Wilson is the nation’s leader in a key statistic: receiving touchdowns.

Michigan football wide receiver leads the nation in touchdown catches

Through three games, Michigan football quarterback JJ McCarthy has thrown for over 700 yards and seven touchdowns. Remarkably, only one of these touchdowns was caught by a player other than senior wide receiver Roman Wilson (the one was caught by Cornelius Johnson against Bowling Green).

Currently, Wilson’s six touchdown catches tie him with Vanderbilt’s Will Shepard, who has played four games, for the top spot in touchdown receptions this fall.

Before the season began, there were many questions surrounding the Michigan football wide receiver corps, especially after the loss of Ronnie Bell, who is currently playing for the San Fransisco 49ers. That said, Roman Wilson’s abilities and consistency, which were highlighted during fall camp, have seamlessly transitioned onto the field to this point.

Despite a somewhat slow offensive game last weekend — which included a slew of turnovers from the Wolverines — Michigan football wide receiver Roman Wilson secured yet another touchdown catch during the Wolverines’ 31-6 victory over Bowling Green. This weekend, Wilson and his quarterback, JJ McCarthy, face the No. 7-ranked Rutgers defense for the Wolverines’ Big Ten opener, presenting an excellent early-season test for the Maize and Blue.

So far this year, Roman Wilson has hauled in 12 receptions for over 200 yards and six touchdowns. While he leads the nation in touchdown receptions, fellow veteran wide receiver Cornelius Johnson currently leads the team in receiving yards, having recorded 13 catches for 239 yards and a touchdown through the first quarter of the season.
