Sherrone Moore and his coaching staff have landed two high profile recruits this week: three-star Edge, Tariq Boney, and and four-star quarterback, Brady Smigiel. Boney and Smigiel committed within hours of one another, and are the first additions from the 2026 recruiting class since February.

New: Michigan guard Roddy Gayle Jr. will return for senior season

Boney is the second defensive commit of the 2026 recruiting class, joining three-star cornerback and early commit Brody Jennings. Smigiel is the number eight ranked quarterback from the class of 2026 on 247sports, so the buzz surrounding the two of them should bring some early versatility to the roster, as well as some hefty talent.

Boney and Smigiel Are Arriving in Ann Arbor Ready to Work

Coaches have drawn comparisons between Boney and recent NFL draft pick, Josaiah Stewart; Boney told the Michigan Insider, “They showed me the way he played and the way I played…And they showed how I [could be developed] into maybe being a player just like that.” Any comparison between a former Michigan Man and a brand new Michigan Man is enough to excite Wolverines across the nation, so Boney is certainly a big commit.

Smigiel is another huge commit, specifically as it pertains to the quarterback battle in the coming years. With Coach Moore waiting until fall to announce who will be the starter between Bryce Underwood, Jadyn Davis, and Mikey Keene, Smigiel will be coming into a QB room that is already filled to the brim with competition. He told the Maize and Blue Review, “Bryce is a really good player, but I’m ready to compete. A lot of guys are running away from this…but 100% I’m just ready to compete and get better.”

It seems that both Smigiel and Boney will be coming to Ann Arbor with positive, excited mindsets, and are both ready to get to work.
