Four-star TE Matt Ludwig out of Billings, Montana announced his commitment to Michigan after a year’s worth of recruiting visits. Tight end coach Steve Casula has been interested in Ludwig since April 2024, when he officially offered him a spot in the 2026 recruiting class. The 6’4 240 pound TE has had a handful of both official and unofficial visits to Michigan this year.
As the fifth-ranked TE in his class nationwide, Ludwig had no shortage of D1 options with regard to where he’d be taking the next step in his career. He had primarily narrowed his offers down to powerhouses Michigan, Texas Tech, Tennessee, and Georgia, but ultimately decided on the maize and blue. His decision came after Coach Casula made the trip out to Montana on May 19th to visit Ludwig one last time.
Ludwig is a Big Catch For Michigan’s Offense Next Season
Above all else, Ludwig is an incredible athlete, competing in basketball, wrestling, and track and field in the football offseason, all while maintaining a strong academic standing. This versatility as both a student and a player should prove a major asset in the tight end room. While his primary focus, of course, is football in the fall, Ludwig maintains his well-disciplined athleticism on the track, keeping with his speed and agility on his feet.
In his junior season, Ludwig fought hard to earn his No. 5 TE recruit ranking, putting up 53 receptions on his 11-game season, totaling 822 yards for four TDs and an average of 15.5 yards per catch. Additionally, he ran for a total of 149 yards resulting in two TDs on an average of 4.3 yards per carry. Though it was his junior season which saw Ludwig soar, his sophomore season certainly put him on the radar of many, Michigan included, with 36 catches for 441 yards for an average of 12.3 yards per catch resulting in 5 TDs.
Coach Casula, along with head coach Sherrone Moore and the rest of the Michigan coaching staff, are excited as can be about Ludwig’s commitment. With his senior season still ahead, Ludwig has a long way to go until he hits his undoubtedly high ceiling, and the Big House should be the perfect place to help him to get there.
