ANN ARBOR, Mich. — On Saturday, the nation got its first glimpse of the 2023 Michigan Wolverines, who Jim Harbaugh claims is the best spring ball team he has ever coached. After winning two-straight Big Ten titles and appearing in the College Football Playoff in both years as well, the Wolverines are expected to compete for another conference championship and more this fall, with what could be Harbaugh’s best Michigan roster to date. After the spring game, Michigan football tight end Matthew Hibner said that the quarterback room is as talented as it’s ever been, and that UM has some serious QB depth behind JJ McCarthy.

Heading into the 2022 season, the Michigan Wolverines had a solid duo at quarterback: 2021 starter Cade McNamara, and former five-star recruit JJ McCarthy. After just one game, McCarthy stole the job from McNamara, who has since transferred to Iowa City to play for the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten West. Matthew Hibner is a senior Michigan football tight end, and though he has not seen a large role just yet, a solid spring game performance could earn him more reps this fall.

During the spring game, Hibner was targeted twice and made two catches for 62 yards with 51 yards after catch (YAC). Following his standout performance, Hibner had a chance to comment on Michigan’s new and improved 2023 QB room.

Despite the loss of Cade McNamara, Michigan is still adding another talented Big Ten quarterback. Jack Tuttle — who is entering his final season of eligibility this year — is the Wolverines’ most recent addition at quarterback via the transfer portal. According to Michigan football tight end Matthew Hibner, he is as talented and experienced as they come.

“Yeah, the quarterback room is complete. Those guys all come into practice and make plays, they all, I mean it’s almost like you run routes and you can’t even tell who’s throwing the ball because it’s all the same. You know, I trust all of these guys, you know, if any of those guys are in the game, I believe 100% they’re going to play to a high level.”

Obviously, the starting quarterback this year will be the Big Ten’s top-ranked quarterback: JJ McCarthy. Still, if anything happens to McCarthy this year, the Wolverines are in good hands when it comes to the depth in the QB room.
