Perhaps no offseason Michigan Wolverines football position group has been watched as close as the cornerbacks have in Ann Arbor. Today, at Schembechler Hall, head coach Jim Harbaugh gave an update on how the cornerbacks are looking — with Amorion Walker a bit banged up right now, the Maize and Blue have a few other cornerbacks emerging as potential Week 1 starters and standouts.

Update and latest buzz surrounding the Michigan Wolverines football cornerback battle

Earlier today, Jim Harbaugh addressed the media and made it a point to break down how the cornerbacks are looking with just 18 days until the new season kicks off. According to Harbaugh, these four are standing out the most right now: Mike Sainristil, Will Johnson, Josh Wallace, and Keshaun Harris.

“Also, I want to leave you with the corners,” Jim Harbaugh said this afternoon. “It’s another position that I mentioned — Mike Sainristil, Will Johnson, Josh Wallace, Keshaun Harris, those have been the top guys. Ja’Den McBurrows and Myles Pollard (are also) playing well.”

Harbaugh went on to name a few standout freshman cornerbacks that have been emerging during this fall’s Michigan Wolverines football practices.

“Three really good freshmen in that group. Another position group that has three that are ascending — DJ Waller, Jyaire Hill, and Cameron Calhoun, all coming on fast.”

Amorion Walker banged up

Notice anything strange? The media room sure did — converted cornerback Amorion Walker, who has been earning all kinds of praise since spring ball, was not named. When asked, Jim Harbaugh explained that Walker is a bit banged up right now, but he expects the sophomore defensive back to be ready to go again soon.

“A little bit (banged up); he’s working through something right now, but I expect to have him back in four to five days,” Harbaugh said.

Sainristil at nickel?

If Mike Sainristil had to play at one spot right now, where would he go? Jim Harbaugh says he can play all over the defensive backfield, but if he had to make a decision on it right now, he would line up at nickel.

“Corner, nickel. He can play both. I think we’re at our best if he’s a nickel,” Harbaugh explained.

The cornerback battle will likely bleed well into the 2023 Michigan football non-conference schedule, but for now, this is the latest on how the potential battle is playing out and which corners are standing out the most.
