Not many new Michigan Wolverines football freshmen will need to step up this year, as the Wolverines have tons of returning talent on both sides of the football. That being said, there may be a new freshman breakout candidate waiting in the wings for a chance to shine with the Maize and Blue in 2023: former four-star cornerback Jyaire Hill.

Jyaire Hill, one of the top-ranked recruits in the 2023 recruiting class, enrolled early this spring and has reportedly already impressed the coaching staff. Heading into the 2023 season, the Wolverines are a bit thin when it comes to cornerback depth, meaning Hill may have plenty of opportunities to shine during the season.

“I think Jyaire Hill is going to be a guy,” defensive coordinator Jesse Minter said during spring ball. “I don’t know if I’ll put him on Will (Johnson’s) track, but I think he’s going to be capable of helping us this year — just a really, really good, competitive mindset that it takes to be successful at that position.”

Jyaire Hill may have been a late addition to the 2023 Michigan Wolverines football recruiting class, but his presence on the roster has already proven to be valuable. According to Hill, he sees himself as someone like star cornerback Will Johnson, who is the Wolverines’ top defensive back.

“I see myself like (Will Johnson),” Hill said, per 247 Sports. “I want to be like Will. How he his, how he became. I’m trying my best … I’ve adjusted and continue to adjust at the moment. Practices are going smooth, and just learning the playbook. One after one: Just trying to go smooth. It’s been cool trying to adapt coming from high school. It’s been sweet.”

Keep an eye on this Michigan football freshman this fall, as he may receive quite a few reps on the defensive side of the football for the Maize and Blue defense.
