Over the 2023 offseason, Jim Harbaugh made it a point to address the Wolverines’ many team needs via the transfer portal. One of his first additions is new Michigan football quarterback Jack Tuttle, who came to Michigan after spending most of his college career with Indiana. Now, with the 2023 season just 19 days away, it appears that this new QB could fill a major team need, behind starter JJ McCarthy, for the Wolverines throughout the upcoming season.

Michigan football needed a backup quarterback now that Cade McNamara and others are gone. Right now, the backup QB battle is still ongoing, but it appears that Jack Tuttle or Davis Warren will win the job. That said, keep an eye on 6-foot-5 sophomore Jaydan Denegal, a former three-star commit from the 2022 class, as well.

While no QB2 has been set just yet, Tuttle stood out in the spring game and has been turning heads so far. In fact, according to tight end Matthew Hibner, it was hard to tell who was throwing (between Tuttle and McCarthy) during spring camp, which is a good early sign for the Maize and Blue. According to Sherrone Moore, having Tuttle in the locker room has been great for the Wolverines for a number of reasons.

“Yeah, (Jack Tuttle) has been awesome,” Sherrone Moore said on Thursday. “First of all, being an experienced guy that played in the Big Ten (Indiana Hoosiers). He knows that (JJ McCarthy) is the guy. But he’s just coming with a great attitude, experience, and the leadership qualities that you want as a guy that has played high-level football.

“He’s just been a guy that you can count on in every second and every mode, and he’s just been awesome to be around. So (everyone is) just excited for him. And obviously, he’s very talented, has a strong arm, can run. So very multiple in what he can do, so just happy to have Jack here in the program with us, too.”

Having an experienced Big Ten quarterback come in and compete for the QB2 role is massive for the Wolverines. If something were to happen to JJ McCarthy this year, this new Michigan football quarterback may be the perfect man to pick up where JJ left off and lead the Maize and Blue to a third-straight conference title and more, if that is asked of him.
