The Maize and Blue are almost two weeks into fall camp now — recently, second-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter had a chance to comment on how things are going. On Friday, Minter delved into many aspects of the program, including new Michigan football transfer linebacker Ernest Hausmann, who is creating tons of excitement ahead of his first year in the Maize and Blue.

On Friday, defensive coordinator Jesse Minter was asked about how sophomore Michigan football transfer linebacker is doing during his first camp in Ann Arbor. Last year, Hausmann had a breakout year as a true freshman for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, earning a starting role and more despite his young age.

“Yeah, Ernest is doing a great job,” Jesse Minter said. “We have talked at length about depth at the linebacker position, and sort of just a value that can add. The value we need to add in order to get to that 26 number, you got to have multiple guys at every position.”

Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter pleased with Ernest Hausmann, LB position battles so far

The Michigan football linebacker room has a lot of depth right now. With Junior Colson, Mike Barrett, Ernest Hausmann, and more, the Wolverines are in great shape, yet need a few clear-cut starters. With this new position battle, Jesse Minter says that Hausmann is adding new competition to the room and making everyone better right now.

“Ernest is doing a great job. He’s picked up our defense, he’s a film junkie, he has raised the level of play in that room,” Minter said. “So I think really just by him coming in and his mentality, the way he approaches it, all of a sudden, Mike B (Mike Barrett) is playing at a really high level, Junior’s playing at a higher level. So competition is what breeds guys having to get better. When you feel really comfortable in your position, you don’t feel like the guy behind you is a challenge that can do something mentally.

“When you feel like there are challengers coming in — I told Ernest to go take their job, I told (the other linebackers) to hold him off and keep your job. And so I feel like he’s just raised the level of play in that whole room and very excited that he’s here.”

Keep an eye on this new Michigan football transfer linebacker because all signs point to an intense position battle throughout the remainder of fall camp. When the season kicks off, there is a solid chance that Ernest Hausmann will find his way into a starting role during his true sophomore season.
