Few things are certain when it comes to the Wolverines’ 2023 roster during fall camp, yet for the first time in a few years, the QB1 job is set in stone heading into the season — it belongs to junior QB JJ McCarthy. With that being said, there is another player stirring up a great deal of positive buzz heading into the season: sophomore Michigan football quarterback Jayden Denegal, a former three-star quarterback prospect from Jim Harbaugh’s 2022 recruiting class.

Sophomore Michigan football quarterback stirring up some notable buzz

Two nights ago, NBA star Kyle Kuzma tweeted at me asking about Jayden Denegal, a sophomore Michigan football quarterback on this year’s roster. So far, not much has been said about Denegal, but there has been growing buzz about his potential with the Wolverines in years to come.

When it comes to fall camp buzz, it can be hard to tell what is real and what is fake — this is the case with every team, player, and preseason fall camp in the nation. So far, here is what we know for sure about Denegal:

What’s the buzz about?

Now, for the more exciting part — the rumblings about this sophomore Michigan football quarterback.

From what people are saying, it sounds like Denegal is starting to really turn heads during his second season with the Wolverines; there is a good chance that he won’t climb higher than QB4 this year (sitting behind JJ McCarthy, Jack Tuttle, and Davis Warren), but that may not stop him from getting a good amount of late-game reps.

Aside from a few photos, there is little footage of Denegal in action with the Wolverines just yet, but judging by some of his high school tapes, there is a chance that Jayden Denegal could develop into something special for the Wolverines. His massive frame is quite different than most Harbaugh-era quarterbacks, with the exception of Wilton Speight (starter, 2016) and Joe Milton (starter for four games in 2020), though this may not be a bad thing in future seasons for Michigan football.

Additionally, further adding to the hype surrounding this sophomore Michigan football quarterback, New York Giants defensive back Adoree Jackson had some high praise for Jayden Denegal this afternoon as well. For the time being, JJ McCarthy is QB1, and a few others are gunning for QB2, though don’t be too surprised if Denegal finds his way onto the field and shows a great deal of promise this fall.
